20 HP. CHASSIS.
SPARE WHEEL CARRIER FOR SIDE POSITION. X4085

We have been running a 20 HP. car with the spare wheel carried in the side position. We find that the latest arrangement for the 20 HP., in which there is no pan, to steady the wheel, is not as satisfactory as the original scheme N.1249. Although the car has only run 200 or 300 miles, we find that the stirrup which is used to locate the wheel sideways, has started to chafe through the outer cover of the tyre. Owing to bracket off the frame being longer it is more flexible and does not hold the wheel as firmly. If ever the wheel is removed and carried at the back, the bracket, stirrup and plate still look unsightly. There is also the danger of passengers or their clothes catching on the stirrup when the wheel is removed.

In a number of cases we have received instructions to fit the side wheel carrier and the customer intends to carry two spare wheels. In that case we ought to give him a reliable wheel carrier which will allow the wheel to be permanently carried in that position.

We recommend we use the original wheel carrier N.sch. 1249. We have in stock 100 sets of step irons suitable for this scheme. We believe the pan could be covered over with a sheet metal plate when the wheel is carried at the back.
