Dear Sirs,

We thank you for your letter of the 25th. inst., with reference to Aluminium-tin bearings and to inform you that we anticipate despatching them this week at the latest. We had hoped to get them away last week-end but unfortunately the castings upon machining were found to have one or two blow- holes and we have therefore re-cast them.

We should like to state that in using this material on a main bearing we cannot overstress the advantage of using efficient filtering, we use here a Tecalemit filter in conjunction with a by-pass type of filter. We find that no matter how careful we are in cleaning parts before building the engine we cannot avoid getting small particles of metal into the bearings. The majority of the trouble appears to happen early in the life of the engine, and we find that at this stage it is advisable to pass all the oil through a filter of the Tecalemit type.

The By-pass type of filter certainly helps to keep the oil clear of foreign matter and carbon, and is well worth while. A good example of this type of filter is the "General" filter made by General Filters Inc., Detroit, Michigan, and for which replacements can be had at a very reasonable price.
