SILTING UP OF RADIATORS.

With the object of discovering the extent of silting up of the radiator due to the use of an aluminium head on the cast-iron engine, the radiator recently removed from 9.B.V. has had the top tank removed. Inspection of the waterways showed the matrix to be in very good condition and absolutely free from the products of corrosion. This radiator had only done 4,500 miles with the cast-iron engine, but the absence of any sign of silting up gives promise of considerable mileage before this trouble becomes apparent.

This block had been removed from the car because of a bad leak between the top tank and matrix. Originally, this leak had been attributed to a fatigue break of the sweated joint arising from the fact that the strap on this radiator had been deleted as an experimental measure. Examination of the stripped block showed however, that the leak was due to faulty soldering during manufacture. As can be seen on the attached photographs, a small length of the joint between the top tank and the matrix is entirely free from solder, the metal itself, not even having been tinned prior to the tank being fitted. It is proposed to take this matter up with the makers, John Marston Ltd., of Wolverhampton.
