It was necessary to hold the car up yesterday, due to the front brakes becoming useless and the rear brakes seizing during the days run. Upon the car returning to the garage after the afternoon's run, we dismantled the front wheels and found the N.S. drum full of oil, the O.S. was also oily. Upon investigating the cause, it was found that when oiling the pivots, there was a very bad leak of oil from the top cap and from the bottom/cover. The nut holding the top cover was half a turn loose, and the leak from the bottom cover which was very bad was due to an uneven/surface between the faces. In one place it was possible to get a .002" feeler when trying the surface with a straight edge. We worked on this job until 3 o'clock in the morning to try to keep the car running but as it turned out, it was too long a job. We have got it fairly oiltight but under the extra oil pressure there is still a slight leak; evidently the pivots have not been previously put under oil pressure. The face of the pivot leaked as if the cutter had torn a piece out when facing up. We also had a bad oil leak from the magneto cover. This when dismantled was found minus the paper whaser. There is a quantity of oil coming out of the water pump drive housing.
