COPY. LEYLAND MOTORS LIMITED, LEYLAND, LANCS. Ref.CE/VWP/HK.{Col. T. Harker - Sales} 2nd. February, 1940. Dict.31. W.A. Robotham, Esq., Rolls-Royce Ltd., Derby. Dear Mr. Robotham, I must apologise for the delay which has occurred in dealing with your letter dated the 19th. January, but unfortunately again I have been very much loaded up with extraneous jobs in connection with War Department, and of course this latest spell of bad weather has just about put paid to everything. Regarding your request for information on the oil purification plant as used by us in our engine test department, I am quite convinced that the expenditure is well worth while, in view of the excellent results which are obtained on the test bench with this system in operation. I think you will agree that we would not have spent all the money on fitting up this apparatus if we had not determined by previous test that there was something in it. The amount of material which is extracted from the centrifuges is surprising, and I do think this initial washing outof the engine on first running is valuable. We have recently placed a further temperature control on the toil tanke, which assists is arriving at more stablisbed figures for engines on test. I do not think there is anything further I can add, except that if I were asked again to consider an engine test bench installation, I would most certainly include the Sharples centrifuges as part of the equipment. I am returning the descriptive article, which you would probably like to retain in your files. Yours faithfully, V.W.PILKINGTON. | ||
