TORQUE TUBE & PROPELLER SHAFT.

With reference to the capability of the Hoffmann Number 365 Journal Bearing to resist end thrust, I wrote Mr Cooper, of the Hoffmann Company, their Technical Manager, in regard to this and attach copy of his reply.

Personally I am of the opinion that it will be extremely difficult to control the end play of the bearing in the method proposed, as I am inclined to think the Journal bearing will wear under the end thrust effects, with the result that a small amount of diametral wear will mean a fairly large movement, under which conditions the bearing will be allowed to run tight into mesh on the over-run and produce the noise and condition to which we object.
