some means of preventing vibrator regulator action.
We have an idea which we are working on at present by which we hope to obtain the very big reduction desired with the avoidance of vibrator regulator action. This action occurs because the voltage falls so rapidly when the contacts first separate that they do not have time to get right over and be caught over. (They will readily stay over on the battery voltage, i.e. until the main switch is put off, when once taken over). If we can give some additional stimulus to the separation of the points just at the first instant of break while the dynamo voltage will be rapidly falling, we may be able to obtain this condition. This we propose to do by winding the whole of the value of R additively to the ordinary shunt coil. Then, when the first break of contact takes place, the whole field current will be immediately diverted (by the inductance of the field winding) through this winding or resistance, and give the additional stimulus to the separation of the points just at the critical instant when it is required. That is the reason that in our diagram we have shown the resistance R side by side with the shunt coil of the auto switch.
We can see no reason in principle why this idea should not ^work satisfactorily and^ mainly comply with the condition referred to in the last paragraph of your note R2/M8.6.27. As long as the charging switch is left on a large resistance would be left on the field circuit and the dynamo may ^sometimes^ not be charging at all or not below the cutting in speed which is
