TO BY- FROM AJS. C. to - HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ORIGINAL X7310 AJS3/M26.6.26. 18. EAC.7. GEARBOX MECHANISM. X7310 The following are modifications which we should be glad if you would instruct to be made to the above gearbox:- (1) With the idea of eliminating any hydraulic effect in the locating plungers we are arranging for holes as indicated in sketch below, both in the plunger casing and in the plunger itself. Handwritten text on first sketch: 7 Holes MAKE .187 DIA .093 HOLES (2) In order to decrease the resistance sideways of the change lever shaft will you please instruct experimental centring springs of half the previous load. (3) With a view to making less friction at the outer end of the change lever shaft bearing, kindly ask for the shaft to be casehardened, and to be run in a casehardened steel bush in place of bronze at this point. (See sketch.) Handwritten text between (3) and (4): WE DESIRE THAT THE SURFACES EXPOSED TO ROAD DUST SHOULD BE GLASS HARD ON SHAFT & IN BUSH. (4) If we have not previously asked for this particular feature will you kindly arrange that the locating plungers have their ends relative to the grooves in the sliders which they locate, as indicated in sketch below, and thereby eliminate any possibility of locking of the slider by the plunger in the event of the slider groove being turned a little too deeply.
