BY APPOINTMENT TO THE LATE KING GEORGE V 1229. VACUUM OIL COMPANY LIMITED GARGOYLE REGD TRADE MARK TELEPHONE WHITEHALL 1010 (14 LINES) TELEGRAMS VACUUM-PHONE . LONDON CAXTON HOUSE . WESTMINSTER LONDON S.W.1 REFERENCE OTJ. 28th July, 1938. Messrs Rolls Royce Limited, DERBY, England. Dear Sirs, Attention of Mr. S. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Grylls. With reference to the sample of inhibitor-treated oil which you had for testing running-in purposes, we now have information regarding a new product which has been extensively used in the States for running-in engines, and we are informed that engine rejections for running-in have become a negligible factor with this product in use. We do not stock this grade normally but can make it up at short notice should you desire to test it. We would mention, however, that it is an oil made up in engine viscosities based on Extreme Pressure lubricants of the chlorinated type (no sulphur) and so far as we are aware there are no materials in your car engines which would be adversely affected by the use of such product. It is not, however, intended to be left in an engine, which point was referred to in our previous conversations regarding the product already supplied and which was taken to be entirely satisfactory in this regard. Perhaps you will be good enough to let us know should you desire to test this new-type product. At the present time we are not making reference to this new oil in regard to your Aero Engine Department, as we are unaware of the affect of it on lead bronze bearings as used in Aircraft Engines. Yours faithfully, VACUUM OIL COMPANY, LIMITED. O.{Mr Oldham} Jones Chief Engineer OTJ/ND UNLESS STATED OTHERWISE ALL OILS ARE QUOTED AND INVOICED PER UNIT GALLON OF 9 LBS.
