To Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} from RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} c. WOF. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}1/AP.27.11.35. With reference to HY{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer}/SR.20.11.35. the position of the items referred to is as follows - 1. Valve Reaming - Report attached. 2. Rear Axle setting Tackle. The tackle for the checking of rear axle casings has been in use since its introduction, but owing to the fact that it has not been maintained to the required standard of accuracy this has resulted in inaccuracies creeping into the manufacturing processes. Axles have been rejected on account of noise and from a preliminary investigation of rejected axles, this has been proved due to machining inaccuracies. It will be necessary to completely overhaul all the equipment before axle assembly can be placed on an economical basis. 3. Gearbox setting jig for facilitating assembly. This tackle is being used on 20/25 and Bentley, but it is not certain whether full benefit with regard to the reduction of assembly costs is being obtained, in which case it is not economical to produce tackle of this description. If however, it is proved satisfactory in operation it is reasonable to expect that similar equipment should be employed on Phantom Gear boxes, but no steps have been taken in this direction on Phantom II. 4. Process of final shaving of crankcase bores. It has not been ascertained whether this practice has been introduced on production but having regard to the amount of trouble experienced due to the rejection of timing gears on Bentley in particular, it can only be assumed that this process is not in operation. continued. | ||
