PN{Mr Northey}3/DN26.1.25. TO BJ FROM PN{Mr Northey} STEERING COLUMN ON "V" SERIES. As I have already reported to you, the dimensions of the steering column for closed cars, i.e., "B" column, on "V" Series, were very closely gone into and considered by all those concerned when CWB and I were at Derby last week. The difficulty in respect of the undesirable appearance of the column having the larger steering wheel, which was fitted to Experimental Car No. 44-PK, is proposed to be got over by increasing the angle of slant of the column, so that the centre of the steering wheel will be 1 1/2" lower. At the same time the diameter of the steering wheel would be reduced by 1", bringing the diameter to the same dimension as that of steering wheels fitted to our 40/50 HP type, but the wheel itself being of the later design, having the smaller peripheral rim. This will have the effect of reducing the dimension between the bottom edge of the steering wheel and the suppressed seat cushion to 9" instead of 10", which so far is our standard measurement at this point. We have decided that taking 1" away in the manner proposed, will not be to the detriment of the driver's seating comfort. By means of the above proposal, the top rim of the steering wheel will be 2" lower than that on the car above referred to. The "C" and "D" columns on "V" Series do not appear to suffer in appearance in the same way as the "B" column. It is important that this instruction which was tentatively given to BY and Evenden last week, should be confirmed forthwith. PN{Mr Northey} | ||
