1) I do not think the water pump requires lubricating at all except when at the works. Any grease in the immediate vicinity of the hot water and grease cup would have to be in the spring shackle lubrication. The water lubrication is automatic (text crossed out).

2) We might say that the brakes should be examined and adjusted if necessary every 1000 miles.

3) I think it necessary for the proper and quiet running of Whittle belt that they it should be soaked in oil but with the outside, not the running side. They should be oil-soaked, then wiped, & be used as dry as possible.

4) I think we should give some figure so that one can use a feeler gauge. We might give a limit say .002" to .004": "small as possible" does not seem definite enough to me.

Kindly note the following suggestions are being made, and we should like your remarks on the same.

That gear oil be used instead of graphite grease for the spring shackles and water pump.

Re. adjustment of rear brakes- We note that you consider no fixed time must be given for doing this, but we think to be in accordance with all the other matter in the book, it is essential, as every operation of adjustment and lubrication is under some heading or other, and if the adjustment of brakes is put separately, not only will it be more difficult to find, but also liable to be overlooked. We shall be glad if you will reconsider this, and state a time or mileage after which the brakes would require adjustment.

Treatment of fan and dynamo belt as given on page 18 is objected to by Mr Platford on the grounds that if soaked in oil the belt would slip. We shall be glad if you will kindly confirm this.

Re. adjustment of tappets- Mr Platford suggests that we should say the clearance between the tappet and valve should be as small as possible, cancelling the .004 clearance.
