Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to WJ. R10/MS.12.21. X.4390 -> 40/50 STARTING - X.1449 X04305 The drawing of the improved design of the small starting carburetter you have already received. Mr. Elliott has just completed a design for positively dosing the throttle during starting, and has included the exhaust heated throttle pipes. We have cut out many parts not now needed and have suggested that the cock on the induction pipe shall be parallel with a fibre thrust washer which should make this part cheaper and better in action i.e., less liable to wear. You have the design of the butterfly valve in the exhaust and everything which is needed for the permanent design of this combined modification for both alteration to existing cars, and also production! In addition you have a scheme for testing carburetter on the exhaust side with self-draining pipes. We shall do no more to this engine but concentrate on modifying the cylinders to suit the present stock of cranks and other parts. R. {Sir Henry Royce} Have received your memo. prefer spring for throttle. my experience suggests preference to positive closing and we had thought out desirability of partly opening throttle while starter was in action and arranged that this could be done enough for starting purposes, also when throttle is widely opened it closes starter throttle which seems good, therefore fit one up like LeC.drawing.
