BATTERY IGNITION CONTACT POINTS.

SHORT SUMMARY OF REPORT EFC1/T24.12.26.

This is a report, with details attached, on a series of tests on the functioning of platinum and tungsten battery ignition contact breaker points under various conditions, which confirm that we are not getting the best possible results from our own contact breaker.
Although every immediate experimental variation thought of has been or is being tried, the detailed results obtained do not indicate as the reason any one definite feature of our present system.

It is, however, proved that it does not lie in the characteristic electrical quantities of the system so much as in some feature or features of mechanical arrangement of the contact breaker.

Though in present standard circumstances tungsten points do not appear to do better than platinum, there is evidence that, in the right circumstances, tungsten would actually be superior. Suggestions are made for modification to contact breaker design by which we may approach the condition of working which appears to be desirable. The text of the report and the detailed results of the various tests are separate.
