Re: 25/30 HP. Carburetter.

Re your memo Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}7/JH.15.6.38.

There are a number of carburetters examined which are found to be quite alright. It is a question of when in doubt go for everything, and tester's very often make the request for examination of the carburetter.

The most prevalent trouble complained of, is the explosions on the over run in the silencer. Hd.{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy} was requested at the last meeting to supply six modified carburetters to overcome this trouble; the first one arrived on the 15th.inst. and this carburetter had to receive attention before it could be fitted.

The choke valve was sticking and did not close fully by the action of the cam. It had to be eased and reset. The choke valve sticking is the next on the list of complaints ( there is a mod. out for this.)

The reports of dirt in the carburetter and petrol level too high and low are not justified, and have very rarely been a cause of complaint.

I have told them at N. that dirt is always found a few hours after cleaning, and they must allow for slight variations in petrol level.

The third complaint is serious, that is the distortion of the float chamber cover, and the collapse of the joint washer, which allows petrol to swish over on to the exhaust pipe when braking etc. This matter I have taken up with By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} and there was a suggestion of altering the over flow pipe to release the tension on the float chamber cover, also a suggestion to have a spigot on the cover to hold the joint packing in position.
