- 2 - Piston Knocks and Overoiling A unit has been handed over to Mx{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} to carry out special tests. It was reported that trouble had been experienced with the rubber ring, and it was found they were of the wrong type. (see also para. re engine bearings) Chunking in Drive. It had been found that with the Stromberg carburettors the chunking was reduced, due probably to improved carburation. It was also reported that we have probably found the most important bit of the gearbox to keep down to fine limits, and are endeavouring t reproduce results on another car. Gearbox. Rig tests are being carried out to investigate the inconsistency of the gear changes, and cones with different degrees are being tried. Tyre Noises Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} reported that the car which is to be handed over to S. next week is considered to be as good as the Cadillac. In this car rubber has been inserted in certain places. Clutch Apparently this can be improved either by giving the clutch pedal a longer travel, or making it heavier. It was agreed that we should prefer the longer travel, and this will be in evidence on the car S. are to have next week. Steering S.described the differences in the La{L. A. Archer} Salle box and the R-R.{Sir Henry Royce} Pre-loading is considered helpful in eliminating kicks and joggles, and self centring is only slightly affected. The car which S. are to have in place of 34-BX will be so equipped. Brakes It was reported it is now agreed that P.III brakes are not as good as P.II, and the drums are being stiffened to | ||
