NEWCASTLE-ON-TYNE 24, ELDON PLACE, BARRAS BRIDGE. 4th July, 1939 YOUR REF. OUR REF. WES/PW. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., Derby. For the attention of J.L. Edwards Esq., Car Experimental Department. Dear Sirs, The writer finds he has not confirmed his verbal report to you on the three fan belts which were collected for examination. The V.165 belt has an original inside circumference of 45.625" and this particular belt when measured here under standard tension proved to have elongated to 46.25" - a total extension on the circumference of 5/8". It appears to us that the usual adjustment should be more than able to cope with extension which as far as pulley centres is concerned will certainly not be appreciably over 1/4". We then stripped the whole construction of the belt and found that it was perfect in every respect - the cords being in their correct position and in no way displaced. With regard to the two lighter belts, we agreed that the one which had been run on an aluminium pulley has apparently suffered owing to grooving of the pulley itself. The other appears to us to have been standing proud in the pulleys and would be more satisfactory on pulleys with a slightly less angle as the belt shows evidence of hard driving on the inner edge. We would also confirm the arrangement made for the testing of a belt under three point drive conditions, when it was agreed that you would supply suitable crank shaft and fan pulleys together with, if possible, an obsolete generator complete with its pulley for the third point. As soon as we are in receipt of these items we can proceed with the erection of the drive on the same test bed where we have previously tested our belts and your fans. Yours faithfully, FERODO LIMITED. W.E. Shilton Manager, Technical Department. | ||
