NEW PHANTOMCodename for PHANTOM I CHASSIS MAGNETOS.

I visited North & Sons Ltd., Watford, yesterday and reported to them that the modified magneto No.85204 which arrived here on the 8th inst. has been subjected to various tests and up to last Friday evening was satisfactory.

Norths expressed their belief that the modified end plate, together with the new base plate and pole shoes, they intend fitting to the standard EO.6 magneto L.H. 60° range will effectually cure the 'sleeve flopping' complained of.

I pointed out that we wished if possible to avoid the widening out of the magneto, i.e., increase in width between the poles of the magnets, and both Mr.North and Mr.Allen stated confidently that they did not think it would be necessary and they of course wish to avoid this if possible.

I saw the parts they are making for the modification of magnetos as well as 2 magnetos which were completed with the new base and pole shoes and end plate, but those magnetos were not ready for testing.

The question of delivery was gone into and Norths stated that unless something quite unforeseen occurs, we may depend upon their despatching to us:-

12 modified magnetos this week (we should receive 2 or 3 of these on Thursday at latest).

20 modified magnetos next week, and

30 per week afterwards

The EO.6 magnetos L.H. 60° range which we sent back to Norths and which they attempted to quieten but failed had the recess under the base painted green to identify them from the unmodified magnetos. It has now been decided that magnetos which are further modified in the manner described, i.e., fitting of new base plate and pole shoes and a stronger end plate, will have the recess under the base painted white.

The new end plate is not fitted with a felt ring, Norths having decided satisfied themselves that oil from a groove in the lower part of the housing will creep round the sleeve and permanently lubricate the sleeve.
