Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/23/KW. 11th June, 1934. H.R. Ricardo, Esq., Messrs. Ricardo & Co., Engineers (1927) Ltd., Bridge Works, Old Shoreham, SUSSEX. Dear Mr. Ricardo, You will remember that some little time ago Mr. Elliot and I came down to talk round the 4-litre Bentley cylinder head. After discussing some of the information available we came to the conclusion that there was not enought evidence to justify us carrying on with the design incorporating these features. Since then, however, we have undertaken single cylinder research on a bigger scale than heretofore and have now got to the position where we are anxious to run a single cylinder engine of this type. In the meantime we have also collected a lot of data on what can be done with the normal overhead valve engine with different combustion chamber shapes and 2 and 4 valves per cylinder. This might be interesting to you. We should like to come down to Shoreham one day next week and would tentatively suggest Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday if this would be convenient for you. Yours sincerely, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
