+312 Run LE Smith C. [illegible] Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} - RND. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Dm.{D. Munro} E/HDY.{William Hardy}2/HP.29.5.36. Vacuum Servo for Phantom III Clutch N.Sch.4787. We send herewith N.Sch.4815 which shows a forging in place of the sheet metal bracket for the lever adjacent to the gearbox arm. We think the forging is likely to be preferred from almost all points of view. We have also modified the nut for the valve so that it may be strong enough when made in aluminium. With regard to the material for the levers, we have on N.Sch. 4787 specified mild steel in all cases including the existing lever on the clutch operating shaft which is now made of nickel steel. Our reason is that we are more concerned with stiffness than strength, and we could not make any reduction of weight with the better material owing to the increased deflection that would result. With regard to the fit of the vertical link for the pedal shaft, on the pedal shaft this should be a parallel push fit. The distance piece between the lever and the shaft flange serves for lateral adjustment of the vertical link. E/HDY.{William Hardy} N.Sch.4815 herewith. | ||
