We paid a visit to Messrs.Smiths at Cricklewood on the 6th instant in order to inspect some of the latest ideas in instrument board illumination. A number of schemes were inspected in which the light is reflected through translucent dials and the effect is quite original. The speedometers on the latest Armstrong Siddeley are illuminated in this way and we brought a sample away for inspection and test at the Works. Messrs.Smiths also lent to us a new combined instrument very much like the one fitted to the Terraplane. We are arranging to test the illumination effect on this instrument also. It is proposed to develop still further the idea of a translucent dial on the speedometer and rev-counter and we are carrying out experiments to ascertain if it is possible to obtain better illuminating effects by this means.
