20 HP. ENGINE GEARS.

We shall shortly be sending a 20 HP. car on a 10,000 miles test. The chief items to be tested will be the new steer-ing and modified front axle.

We want, however, to make use of this car in order to try out and standardise any improvements which can be made on engine gears.

We have seen on some 20 HP. cars that they are now fitting soft steel cam wheels. If we are satisfied that soft steel cam wheels are what we want to use, then we ought to fit them to the 20 HP. car which is to run 10,000 miles so that they can be properly standardised.

RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} and myself have considered the difficulties with the 20 HP. timing wheels and we suggest a very necessary alteration in order to improve engine gears on the 20 HP. car is to make the idler wheel mounting adjustable similar to what it is on the Phantom and similar to what it was on the Silver Ghost.

We are not aware of all the points which have led up to fitting soft steel cam wheels and therefore it is difficult for us to see why it should be necessary to use material for the cam wheel which we have never used on any other car.

In making the idler wheel adjustable we shall only be following our standard practice so that we suggest that this is a job which could be done at Derby and fitted on to the car which will run the 10,000 miles test.
