Report on Chassis 10-GIII after 2948 miles

Starter Motor.

This has been very erratic in action. Upon pressing the switch button the motor has revolved without engaging; at other times the gears have chattered on the edge of teeth of fly wheel; we dismantled the starter motor to find the cause of the trouble. Our investigations have led us to believe that the cause is due to the nut being too free a fit on the thread and upon being flung back upon engine starting the action of the stop plate lifts the barrel or nut upwards and causes it to bind on the thread. Also this unit containing the cork friction washer does not face up true when screwed back to the friction stop. This tends to throw the nut cross wise and bind. In this condition it will not free itself when revolved. We have tried this while motor was dismantled. If we did not allow the nut to come right back to the stop, it operated every time.

We are of the opinion that a new nut and worm is required with less clearance.
