Issues with a leaking retaining bush, front axle controls, and failing engine side trays on test cars.

II.II.33.

Our last Car here 21.G.IV., the retaining bush had become enlarged and was leaking so much, that we had to do something to prevent it, and having had experience with the Perfect Seals on the SpectreCodename for Phantom III, fitted one, to the bearing of the swinging arm which did make a 100% cure. This job is a matter of trying to clean the Car up.

FRONT AXLE CONTROLS.

The bottom bearings of the axle control have never been satisfactory. We have had to adjust them on every test out here. The modifications to the lubrication have helped and is fairly satisfactory. Arrangements have been made between Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} and myself that before we requested a change in design, we should make sure of the lubrication. A considerable amount of work has been carried out to try and improve the wear of the bearings, both by By's department and ourselves.

ENGINE SIDE TRAYS & FRONT GUARD.

At an estimate we should say 80% of the Cars that have been out here have returned with broken side engine guards, pieces missing and patched up. On the last two or three Cars run in the summer time the first time they had to be removed, they have been left off for the remainder of the test and put back to bring the Car to Derby. When fitted, the men will go to anything to try and avoid having to dismantle them to get to do a job. We have reported in the past of these failures, but major failures have occurred which has drawn all the attention to them, consequently the trays have not received the attention.

We may say that we have seen Cars at the Paris Depot in a worse condition than our own.
