CONTINENTAL STANDARDISATION TESTS. 30.G.VII. - SILVER PHANTOM. Report After 15,000 Miles Running. Running is being continued as a greater mileage is now considered necessary for a prototype. ENGINE. B.80. N° 5 Unit. The eight cylinder in line engine with side exhaust valves and inlet valves in an aluminium cylinder head has proved quite exceptional in its freedom from trouble and maintenance of tune over a mileage which was formerly considered sufficient for standardisation if the unit survived without any breakages. After this mileage, the engine will idle perfectly smoothly after a fast run, there is no apparent need for decarbonising, and the power, silence, and smoothness is fully maintained. It is possible to run on "Tourisme" with only occassional detonations, and in this respect, it is superior to Wraith or Phantom III. The side exhaust valves are excellent for maintaining a constant clearance and have not required adjustment during the mileage. The fan, water pump, and dynamo are driven by a single belt and this has proved entirely reliable in spite of the sustained high speeds. With the exception of attention to the oil tightness of the rocker cover and tappet door joints, it has not been necessary to call for any modifications in the engine unit. Some detail work on the carburetter is required which is receiving attention. | ||
