G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} V.{VIENNA} ENGINE. The connecting rod bearings of the above car are in an excellent condition. With the exception of N° 2 which has evidently had some grit go through, the bearing surfaces are perfect. There is no sign of looseness or hammering in on the shims. We have examined the bottom halves of the main bearings and being white metal, there is the usual pitting marks but no sign of cracks or breaking up. From the condition of the bearings it would appear that the life has been doubled. PISTONS. The Pistons show heavy markings on the top gland on the gudgeon pin sides as if the piston had been chattering. The general bedding area is as usual, so far we have not been able to discern any cracks. Rings were all free, so the loss of compression must have been due to valves. VALVES. They found the exhaust valves pitted and under the valve head to the stem, the metal had been attacked by the lead fuel. EXHAUST MANIFOLD The manifold has contracted to such an extent that it has broken the ends off. It has also distorted in such a manner that the joint faces are well beneath the induction pipe faces. Now that there is more surface of the manifold bolted to the induction pipe (hot spot), it would appear to cause more distortion. We have just about got rid of this trouble on the 25 HP. Now we shall have to start again. Some years ago on the old 20 HP. we had failures galore, and after umpteen alterations a malable pipe was made. We do not know of a failure of that pipe, could we therefore have a malable pipe made for the 30 HP. ? G.W.H. | ||
