We received the following cable -

"Nov. 1, 1921 - London.

No.1 - Agree you use pilot jet arrangement, our tests show that (the arrangement) with moving choke (is) best, also exhaust heated throttle and vaporiser pipe, also louvres to radiators. Understood you were in agreement with Derby. This combination satisfactory and equal anything in use. Inform Basil Johnson Royce"

This is evidently a reply to cable 135 (Oct. 27) sent by Mr. Basil Johnson, reading as follows:-

"Johnson - Rolls-Royce reputation America really very critical. Frosts have started; cars will not start; owners bitterly complain and competition spread news. Springfield informed England more than year ago, and have awaited design to use this winter; suggest you obtain summary. Refer to telegrams to Derby July 7, August 11, are we confident we have sufficient energy in England to tackle America serious troubles in sufficient time to save reputation here. Springfield still await our approved solution. Do England approve Springfield proceeding as per their cable 133 and 134. B.Johnson.

Our position in this matter is that we are in entire agreement with the use of the new pilot jet with moving choke, the vaporiser pipe and louvres, since we have found all these devices to give excellent results in our experimental work.

On the exhaust heated throttle, however, our position is:-

(a) That we have not received drawings or models of this device and have therefore not been able to try it out under American conditions.
We received an early outline scheme of the device from Mr. Royce, but understand from Mr. Hives latest
