Material change for the Goshawk II engine's flywheel to cast iron.

In consideration of the fact that we shall be making our own castings, and can use a very strong brand of cast iron, we have decided to make the whole of the flywheel, including the clutch pressure plates carrying the ferodo, in cast iron. The gear ring will be shrunk on separately in wrought steel. We also think that the cover plate of conical form can also be of cast iron. This was originally intended to be of aluminium. I have not finally decided this, Also it may be advisable to put a rough hoop on the rear end of the flywheel hub. It is intended that the wrought steel ring shall be obtained as solid drawn tubes, or projectile forgings, and parted off. The dimensions are given on this note. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
