CLUTCHES.

We have discussed with R.{Sir Henry Royce} the question of the
co-efficient of friction shewn by our clutches, and he suggests
that we should carry out a test with a view to determining
where the losses occur.

It is suggested that the serrations, approximately
1.125 dia. between the driven member of the clutch and the 1st.
motion shaft of the gearbox, may under certain circumstances
lock up before the full spring pressure has come on both sides
of the plate, causing loss of pressure on one side.

R.{Sir Henry Royce} suggests that in order to test this we should
gradually reduce the spring pressure on the Phantom until it is
just made to slip. The Phantom differs from the 25HP. in
having a flexible joint between the driven shaft of the clutch
and the 1st. motion shaft of the gearbox, so that the serrations
cannot lock up very firmly in space.
