X1109. Leakage Tests on Insulating Paper After Heating at 200°c for Six Hours.
These tests were made as a result of the failure of a number of ignition coils, being attributed to overheating of the coil, and it subsequently being observed, that under certain conditions of use, the temperature of an ignition coil might rise to as high as 150°c.
The test consisted of heating up to 200°c samples of the various papers under test, at which temperature they were maintained for a period of six hours. Afterwards the samples were subjected to high, continuous, electrical pressures with the view to measuring the leakage current, if any, and so gauging and comparing the effects of the heating on the papers.
A sample of each of the three papers, American varnished, Symons' varnished, and Symons' waxed, was made up as described in P.D. 24/8-5-28; the leakage tests being made at temperatures of the atmosphere and 100°c.
