85840. G.W.Hancock Esq., Hotel de France, Chateauroux, Indre, FRANCE. From Ha/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Ha/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/MJ.28.11.31. Many thanks for your memo of the 26th.inst. We note your remarks re. the cross steering tube. It is very puzzling that the load falls off without wear taking place or the spring taking a permanent set, but you will be able to keep this unit under observation and let us know whether the variation in load now ceases since the pads took up a good bedding. OVERHEATING. - You did not say whether you have any further information on this subject. We are rather interested. ENGINE LUBRICATION. - Now we have stripped 19-04. we are disgusted with the condition of the engine generally, running on Castrol XL oil. The amount of carbon is altogether excessive on the scraper rings etc. We presume that when you had a look at the valves on this car you decarbonised. It would be an excellent thing if you could run 18-04. throughout the tests in France without taking any carbon off the pistons.. We are not sure what oil you are running in this car, we presume it is Castrol XL. PETROL CONSUMPTION. - Your petrol consumption appears to be surprisingly good compared with the average speed put up. It would be instructive to have petrol consumption figures for 30, 40, and 50 m.p.h. at a steady speed if you have time to run them off. CLUTCH. - It would be interesting to know whether you can get away with a weaker clutch spring now that you have cured the overoiling trouble. Ha/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} | ||
