Road test on a Bently Rear Axle to resolve an over-run period issue.

1113 Kingsbury. To Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} 26th April, 1937. Bently Rear Axle. We have tackled an axle with a 50-40 over-run period 78 A.H. I had the correct nip made of the thrust ball race and a damper fitted, but for the first test the damper was made solid. The test on the road after a 20 mile run showed no period at 50-40, but a period developed at 30 m.p.h. chiefly on the over-run. This is an old 3½ litre car so we are not leaving the damper on, and the time factor being against us, there is no time to start playing about with the setting of the pinion. There is no heavy marking on the crown wheel to show the position of the pinion. This case has, however, saved the changing of the ball race. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GWH.{George W.
