standard tube, but we are now fixing the standard tube so as to confirm this.

Dynamo drive rattle. This is rather bad on 7-Goshawk-11 and the amount of slack in this drive appears to develop much worse. TMW. reports that 4-Goshawk-11 was also bad in this respect. Has any alteration or action been suggested to deal with this complaint or is it considered of any serious importance. Has R's complaint that the cover for the dynamo could not be taken to be dealt with seriously in view of the fact that the exhaust pipe I take it is only temporary, as the magneto drive will still have to be allowed for.

Carburetter. Have you any further comments or suggestions re. alterations to be made to the carburetter over and above that which has been suggested by you or R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence. Although we are persevering with the Carburetter on 7-Goshawk-11 which is showing rather better prospects, I am anxious that we should be working on the same lines in connection with this Job with the various parts sent out with 6-Goshawk-11, I have no doubt by now some definite facts have been established. In sending out the cone restrictors we supplied tapers of 1 in 4 and 1 in 6. Have you tried the 1 in 6? I propose making one up for the low speed jet 1 in 8. Has the trouble of "spitting in the exhaust" been considered as part of the carburation trouble? I trust this fault has not been overlooked.

R.{Sir Henry Royce} complains that the valve for the starter carburetter should be a better fit. On the contrary, according to the present instructions, this valve is a rather an easy fit. Has anything been settled or discussed with regard to this matter?

Dynamo failure. I wrote Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} yesterday re. suggested cause of dynamo failure as I did not think the brushes had worn, but rather, that the brushes in the first place were not long enough. EFC. is now taking steps to obtain some longer ones. R.{Sir Henry Royce} is also recommending that Le Carbon brushes should be used in preference to morganite, which I understand were used on 4/5/6-Goshawk-11. We have sent Le Carbon brushes to Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} in dealing with his request for two sets of brushes, but in trying these on 7-Goshawk-11 they seemed particularly noisy - (EFC. now informs me this is the trouble with these brushes).

Place for spare fuse wire. Has any position for this been suggested? It has been proposed for the aluminium cover of the distribution box to be changed to bakelite. This, I take it is to overcome shorting when taking off or fixing the cover. Has this point been mentioned by R.{Sir Henry Royce} - do you think it should be first tested out?

[Handwritten notes in left margin:]
Known for dynamos that they are detachable if this is difficult with new exhaust pipe O.K. but we should make certain it is.

Have done nothing with idle parts on G6

R requires valve must be a close fit.

Dynamo on G G is most important at high speed but is held out at present.

Cover should be made of Bakelite at present quite impossible to draw a shuttle without shorting.
