America appear to be in trouble with steering on the present cars, we give below information we have as regards tests and experiments on steering. We know of four possible trouble with our present steering:- 1. Low speed steering wobbles. 2. Unstable steering. 3. Oscillation in the steering wheel when going over a bumpy road. 4. Steering wobbles at high speeds due to out-of-balance wheels. NO.4. we can dismiss because the obvious cure is to balance the wheels and tyres. No.1. Low speed steering wobbles have been with us more or less since the very first cars, in fact the 2-cylinder R.R. Car had this complaint very pronounced. Low speed steering wobbles can be brought on most cars if one knows the trick of doing it. The condition is to get the car running at 12 to 15 M.P.H. and give the steering wheel a sharp flick and then hold the wheel as tightly as possible. For instance, on 1.EX Car, which Mr. Royce has used considerably and which all the experts of the Company have tried and pronounced it as a Contd. | ||
