E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wst. c. to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} 86119. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wst.11/MA.14.8.36. WEAR OF CAM SPINDLE ON PHANTOM III IGNITION GOVERNOR. We have just completed a bench endurance test, equivalent to 20,000 miles running on the car, on a Phantom III distributor and governor in accordance with your memo, refer. E/JNR.{Charles L. Jenner}1/HP.12.11.35. The test has been held up unduly due to difficulty in obtaining a suitable rig. The distributor was oiled every 2,000 miles with three drops of oil through the usual lubricator, and the cam spindle oiled before assembly. At the conclusion of the test the governor was dismantled and found to be corroded due to Nitrous oxide vapours generated in the distributor chamber. The cam spindle was also discoloured due to corrosion and it was apparent that little, if any, lubricant had reached this point. The governor in question has been handed to you for inspection.
