Dear Mr. Robotham, I would take this opportunity of thanking you for the attention you gave to Mr. Spurrier and myself during our visit to your Works on Tuesday, the 29th ult. The discussion we were able to have on technical design was of very great interest, and quite a lot of useful information has been obtained. We would therefore deal with one or two points as they were discussed :- 1. Elektron and its uses. We advised you of the difficulties which have been experienced, both in production and service, with elektron crankcases, more particularly in regard to its application to oil engines. To give you some indication as to the scantlings of metal as used, we enclose herewith a crankcase drawing which will give you all the desired information. We are at present in contact with Sterling Metals Limited, with a view to conducting further experimental work consisting of modified material of a harder nature, heat-treatment, both when cast and after rough machining, and it is our intention to embody tests in connection with the use of austenitic steel bolts in place of our present standard. Any information which is forthcoming as a result of these tests we will pass over to you when it is available. | ||
