[Handwritten: X328] [Stamped: SECRET] To EY. From HDY.{William Hardy} C. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} E.H.S., BG, DHC, HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Drg HDY.{William Hardy}1/HP.6.7.35. SpectreCodename for Phantom III Gearbox [Handwritten: RBY] With reference to the report by CWN. that the interlock pin worked out of position and jammed the 1st speed in gear, we find that this is due to the extension on the plunger housing not having been lengthened by us when the higher 1st speed leverage was provided. N.Sch.4561 shows what we suggest to remedy the trouble. It is not merely a case of lengthening the extension as there is insufficient clearance for the existing jaw piece, but the jaw piece must be modified as shown. For existing boxes with the original actuation leverage to suit the 15.5" gear lever we suggest the provision of a spring loaded ball to hold the interlock pin in place by friction as an alteration such as on N.Sch.4561 cannot be made to the original jaw piece. We make out that it is not possible to groove the pin for the ball with any advantage. If there are any plunger housings for boxes with the modified actuation machined with short extensions these can be made available by sweating in an extension as we show. HDY.{William Hardy} | ||
