WC.85. COPY 12.3.28. BAKELITE TRACKING. With reference to E2/M7.3.28 I have seen Mr. Brock about this and he says it is practically impossible to mould without a filling of some kind either asbestos, wood flour, or fibre, etc. He is unable to say whether tracking would be obviated by any new filling or whether the synthetic resin powder itself would be free from tracking. We ought to write to the technical expert of Bakelite Ltd., 68 Victoria St, S.W.1. to ascertain whether it is possible to produce non-tracking mouldings. Mr. Brock thinks that varnishing the inside of the distributor head would cure the tracking and carbonisation. I have seen a head thus treated and it appears worth an experiment. It also appears possible to mould a rubber moulded ring inside the head to prevent tracking but this procedure is accompanied by a few disadvantages, notably that of cracking due to shrinkage and ageing. We might also try a distributor head moulded with the material marketed by the British Celanese Co.Ltd. of Spondon, apparently a non-resinous material with a non-inflammable cellulose base.
