I wish to draw your attention to the following which you may consider of some importance. Although the D.O., the record department, and Mr Hoscoe cannot give me any definite information I believe that all series 700 were fitted with pivots C.471/2. The Repair Dept. have also changed the pivots of a large number of cars of 900 and 1000 series from C.75/S to C.471/2. (this replacement is for larger ball bearings). The D.O. have stated that C.471/2 are weak, possibly as weak as those we are replacing. The dies for these have been reinforced and re-numbered C.471A and C.472A, and a dozen of the new forgings are expected daily. Should we not therefore have the above pivots replaced on customers' chassis, or at least experiment to ascertain how they compare for strength with those that we are replacing? The D.O. have issued no instructions re the above, but neither did they initiate or issue instructions re these replacements that we are now dealing with. [Signature: R.S.Y.] | ||
