On the other hand, we will acknowledge that the woof has been reduced to small threads as widely spaced as possible. Between two successive layers, see a strong layer of rubber (fig. 5.)

The Cable tyre is always of a larger section than the canvas tyres of a corresponding size. It is, therefore, more resisting, and more comfortable.

From all these new methods of manufacture it follows that the Cable tyre is much easier to handle notably in mounting and dismounting, on account of its suppleness. It is that suppleness which constitutes its quality, bringing about the economy resulting from its use because the tyre is affected by much smaller internal work, hence the lowering of temperature.

We can a priori argue without having made the slightest experiment by elementary reasoning that it deteriorates less quickly than its predecessor and that it absorbs in the general propulsion of the vehicle a smaller quantity of petrol.

What do the experiments prove :-

1. How they absorb the obstacle:

Under the same conditions of load, pressure and speed an 880 x 120 R.U. (Canvas) tyre and a tyre of 880 x 120 CABLE are forced to pass over the same obstacle, over 2 inches high and 2½ inches wide (figure lv). By means of an appropriate apparatus one measures the height to which the centre of the wheel is raised when the tyre passes over the obstacle. The following figures are found :-
canvas tyre - 36 m/m (one and seven sixteenths of an inch). Cable Tyre 23.5 m/m (Fifteen-sixteenths of an inch).

The R.U. has absorbed 14 m/m of the height of the obstacle (nine-sixteenths of an inch) whereas the Cable has absorbed 25.5. (one inch)
