Re-design and modification of an endurance test rig for axle-shafts and wheels.

| To Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GB. ENDURANCE TEST RIG FOR AXLE-SHAFTS, WHEELS, ETC., The above rigs were shown on Drawings P.162 and PL.172. In the detailing of these by the Plant Dept., the rigs were practically re-drawn. One result of this is that there is now no accomodation for the door-lock test. Another result is that the weight of the iron work for the tests which are accomodated has increased by 156 lbs. The belts and pulleys shown in our drawings were proportioned to transmit the power which we required at each spindle. In the detailing, the number of belts in the intermediate drive was increased from three to four and in the final drive from three to five. Pulley sizes were changed; the most notable of these was in increase in diameter in the large pulley, in the final drive from 20 inches to 38.5 inches. 5/8" bolts were used throughout by the Plant Department. 26 lbs of these could have been omitted without reducing the strength of the structure in any way. Where the experience of the Plant Dept., suggests that a change to a rig design is desirable, we would like to be consulted as we may have the addition of other tests to the rig in mind. g.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} Bastow.
