GEARBOXES AND AXLES - PHANTOM 11.

MX{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer}8/T.11.6.30. I am quite in agreement that the use of Whitmore's Compound or Prices (actually to be used) in the gearbox for endurance and power running will undoubtedly give an improved finish to the box and should tend to reduce the noise, i.e. boxes should be more silent after running.

We should also like to try out tentatively again Price's Compound in rear axles. We have found no adequate reason for the failure of the axles on test when using Price's Compound, and further we are interested in picking out any axles which may be doubtful, and if Prices will do this it is an advantage to use it, so that an odd scrap axle should not worry anybody, but two or three failures in succession would call for re-consideration of the position, and would rather confirm that there was some difference between the two lubricating compounds.
