A Ph.III oil cooler casing has been returned from our Service Department having been found cracked when removed from a car (Service Report No. N.1144).

Apparently several cases of this have occurred, see Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} 19/N.6.7.38, and we have handed the cooler casing E.85028 to the Laboratory for examination. They have etched and analysed the material with the results shown on attached copy of report. The casing after etching shows further cracks in various places, and we are sending it herewith for your examination.

We should like to have your remarks on the material analysis figures, and also on the fact that the Laboratory state that this material is a poor die cast material, and we should like to know how it is that this material has been used for these castings, which are, of course, die castings.
