INSTRUCTION LEAFLET NO. 48.

Installation of Flexible Shaft Drives for Engine Speed Indicators.

Description of Shaft.

The flexible shaft consists of closely wound layers of steel wire having steel ends soldered on.

It is mounted in a flexible metallic casing provided with coupling nuts at the ends. The casing has a certain amount of end flexibility and the length can thus be adjusted by slight twisting if necessary. (Exact length depends on bends when installed).

The shaft should be well greased and should be examined before installation - it can be withdrawn from its casing by removing one of the split washers. On replacing this washer it should not be left twisted.

The lubricant should be -

Installation.

1. Care should be taken that the squared ends are an easy fit in the indicator and gear box sockets. If the small collar on the squared end binds when the nut is tightened up, the flexible shaft will either break or the indicator readings will be erratic.

A certain amount of backlash of the ends on their squared hole sockets is of no consequence, but it is very important that they should not be a tight fit. They should be greased periodically.

2. The complete shaft should be installed with as few bends as possible and these should not be less than 9" radii without prejudice to the life of the shaft.
