RE ACCUMULATOR BOX CARRIED IN
REAR OF CHASSIS.

Referring to the above job, it is necessary to use fittings for the accumulator box which as far as we know, are made of the best material we can find for resisting the action of sulphuric acid.

As the design at present stands, the accumulator box is made of wood, and has cast aluminium end plates. These end plates have hooks formed on them which engage with stirrups hung from tubular cross members of the chassis. Mr. Royce would like you to find out -

(1) How far aluminium is good for resisting the action of the acid.
It will probably be necessary to make the cast end plates of the box of pure aluminium.

(2) What is the comparative resistance of stainless steel when correctly heat treated and otherwise, to the action of the acid ?

(3) Mr. Royce thinks there is no possibility of obtaining stainless steel forged stirrups, as this material should be very difficult for forging. Would you kindly confirm this and let us know what the possibilities of working this material are.

It is thought that we shall have to use forged steel (non-stainless) stirrups with a lead covering, and so far as it is remembered, Messrs. Glovers have a process of lead covering whereby the pieces are first tinned and then treated with a Tern plate covering consisting of a mixture of lead and tin, after which the lead covering is applied.
