To Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} From G.W.H. X7941. Hotel de France, Chateauroux, FRANCE. 14.7.32. 19-Ex. Re. your memo Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}6/MJ.12.7.32. The temperature of the oil is recorded as you state on the outlet from the pump. It is taken between the oil pump and the filter, so there is not much cooling effect taking place before the oil reaches the bearings. I purposely had the maximum oil temp. recorded on the daily reports to try and get R.{Sir Henry Royce} interested. We may yet get some method of cooling the oil. If it were only possible to demonstrate to R.{Sir Henry Royce} the difference in the silkiness of the engine with cool oil as against when it becomes hot, I'm sure no time would be lost in designing an oil cooler.
