EFFECT OF AUXILIARY GAP IN ENHANCING SPARKING AT THE MAIN GAP UNDER ADVERSE CONDITIONS.

Further to our EFC7/T7.1.21, in case you have not seen this, I would like to make mention of the article on the "Process of Ignition" by Messrs. A.P. Young and H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Warren, in the "Automobile Engineer" of March last. There is also a short article on p.1184 of the "Motor" of January 12th in which the conclusions of Messrs. Young and Warren are quoted. These are as follows :-

(1) "When the leakage in the high tension circuit is sufficient to prevent the spark generator from producing a spark at the plug electrodes, then the mere introduction of an auxiliary gap is distinctly beneficial.

(2) When the leakage in the high tension circuit is not sufficient to prevent sparking, but is of such magnitude as to make the spark generator somewhat uncertain in its operation, then the introduction of an auxiliary gap will overcome this uncertainty and ensure regular firing.

(3) In cases (1) and (2) cited above, the degree of improvement is dependent on the length of the auxiliary gap, but very susceptible to small gap lengths. If the length of the auxiliary gap is of the order of 0.02 in., as is commonly
