Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to BY c. to Sft.{Mr Swift} X790 EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}/Thn1/H19.7.21. X.2565 RE. TESTING OF CHASSIS. X.1349 X.380 X.790 With reference to your memo. Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}5/M 8.7.21 attaching BJ's memo BJ22/H13.7.21, we note that PN.{Mr Northey} is recommending that the low compression engines of the seven tested by him should be converted to new medium compression. It will be necessary for us to know the chassis numbers so that we can instruct Mr. Evans to remove the liners. Is it intended that we should only convert the low compression engines which PN.{Mr Northey} has actually tried, or is it suggested that all low compression engines not yet delivered to customers should be similarly treated as of course the low compression engines which PN.{Mr Northey} has tried will be average samples of other low compression engines which are lying at coachbuilders agents, etc. We have 98 low compression cars at present at the works off test not yet delivered, and there are of course a large number lying at Lillie Hall, and coachbuilders, not yet handed over to customers, probably to the extent of 100/150 or more. We have had not so far proposed to dismantle any engines especially for the conversion to medium compression, but only to carry out this alteration on subsequent engines built, or on engines on test which are dismantled for other purposes, see BY's memo. BY7/P 5.7.21. We suggest that the Works Committee should discuss this matter, and put the policy before Sales Dept. at the same time as they are discussing the changeover from thick to thin leaf springs. EP{G.
