Dear Sirs,

25/30 and Phantom lll - Steering Gear.
RE: Grinding of Races in Roller Follower.

As you are aware we have been discussing with Messrs. Ransome & Marles, the proposal for them to grind the internal ball and roller races of the roller followers for the Phantom lll and 25/30 steering gears, the one we are most particularly interested in getting them to do being the internal ball race of the 25/30 follower.

Mr. Hardy of our Experimental Department has spent a considerable amount of time on this job, and informed me this morning that Messrs. Ransome & Marles are prepared to take up the work for you immediately you are able to supply them with the necessary roller parts, but they draw attention to the fact that on the sample race which they have ground the hardness of the material before grinding only showed a Rockwell of 53, whereas it should, to give a reasonable life, show a minimum Rockwell of 58.

There must, of course, be no break in the supplies of material to keep our output going, and therefore it will be necessary for you to produce a number of rollers by normal methods, whilst at the same time supplying Messrs. Ransome & Marles with a stock of parts to enable them to grind the races in question on one of their generating ball bearing race grinders.

In regard to the Phantom lll, here again we think that the track for the rollers would be better finished if ground by Messrs. Ransome & Marles, and it would be necessary to treat this in a similar way to the 25/30 by having a stock of parts got ready over and above those required to meet our normal production requirements.
