PHANTOM III TIMING GEARS.

Re specification of engine required for the above tests.

We find that it will be more economical to fit a complete crankshaft (if an old one is available) and bearings, together with clutch, clutch casings and front and rear suspension brackets (discarded parts will do), than to make the special rig fittings indicated in paragraph one of RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/PJH.9/AF.21.6.37.

The above refers to the new crankcase which is being prepared for the corrosion tests.

Regarding the existing test crankcase, it will be necessary to complete the machining of the wheelcase end, the flywheel end and the main bearing housings, etc., these being at present only rough machined, unless it be decided to delay the fitting of the new test crankcase to an engine after completing the corrosion tests, as at present proposed, until such time as a satisfactory conclusion is reached on the timing gear tests.
